Curacao and The Netherlands has signed an agreement

Curacao and The Netherlands have reached an agreement for help with the budgetary deficit. “Today we finalized a journey towards a stronger Curacao. We’ve achieved a political agreement in a positive ambiance.

Today we can continue working together on the reform and necessary investments for Curacao and achieve a stronger Curacao”. Those were the words of the Prime Minister, Eugene Rhuggenaath, during a press conference held today together with the State Secretary for the Interior and Kingdom Relations, Raymond Knops.

“We can give hope and perspective to the citizens of the island and to ultimately stand on our own feet. Now we will start working towards a new phase because there is work to do.” Knops on his end congratulated the Government of Curacao for their courage in taking steps that will benefit the people of Curacao. All of this with the purpose to restore the economy of Curacao. Since March, The Netherlands has reached out to help with financial and emergency aid. The Netherlands wants to continue helping, but it has to be based on good decisions and the work must be executed as promised. The proposal has been on the table since July 10 and they continued negotiating respectfully on both sides. Discussions were about creating jobs, more affordable food, education, and better care.

This is what the Netherlands wants. “One must have balls to start a new path”, is what the Dutch politician said. “The problems are big, just like in any other parts of the world. But Curacao, where they depend mainly on tourism, the problems are much bigger”. Knops expressed his satisfaction towards everyone he met during his previous visit and all the problems that were brought to his attention. “We’ve reached an agreement for these people, to present them with a better perspective. We want them to have a better future”.
