Scarcity of fruits and vegetables on the market

Last Tuesday, the ship AS Fabrizia was supposed to arrive in Aruba with cargo from Miami. It is a King Ocean ship, sailed to Aruba by Gomez Enterprises. The ship departed the Port of Everglades on Thursday and was supposed to reach Aruba the following Tuesday. But, it has yet to arrive, which has left our island with a scarcity of various products, but mainly fruit and vegetables.

It appears that the ship has experienced an “engine breakdown” when departing from the Port of Everglades. They managed to resolve the issue and headed to Kingston, Jamaica to tend to theissue. There is no set date for the ship to reach Aruba with its 132 containers abroad for Aruba. Of this cargo, about 20% of it contains cold produce.

Aruban companies that rely on these shipments are, without a doubt, struggling due to this disturbance. Hotels, fruit vendors, and even some super markets are suffering due to this delay.

As a consequence, many hotels have had to go out to local supermarkets in an attempt to find produce to serve to their guests. The occupation levels have been high these last few weeks, so many were really counting on this shipment.

We expect there to be more produce on the market next week as this delayed shipment is likely to arrive at the same time as the new one. It will likely be the case that a lot of the products will either be damaged, unfit to sell, or need to be sold right away before they are spoiled. This might cause certain products to be sold at a special reduced price to “get them off the shelves quickly”, according to an expert.
