One person dead after a radio tower snaps in two

Just before midday on Thursday, an unfortunate accident took place in Montaña. Residents in the area sounded the alarm for a man that was hanging from a mast that was bent in two.

Apparently, the man was doing some repair work and was wearing a harness.

Our sources indicate that the victim is Bernard Beutner, with call signal DL6RAI. Beutner used the radio tower as was granted temporary access by “Dienst Telecomunicatie Zaken” (DTZ) to transmit from Aruba.

He and his colleague Martin arrived on the 13th of May and were scheduled to stay until the 29th May.

They were staying at Ham Radio Rental, located at Montaña 28-H, which Beutner owned. When he is not in Aruba, he rents out the house with all of the radio equipment included.

When he went to do some repair work, it had fatal consequences. The mast bent in two, which could be the result of various factors, mainly due to wear and tear due to corrosion caused by salpeter, for example.

The police and an ambulance rushed to the scene and tried to resuscitate him, but it was already too late.

Aruba does not have many professionals who are able to do this work. It is a very risky undertaking that needs to be done with the proper steps. What exactly went wrong in this case, is not yet known.

It is now up to the detectives to conduct the necessary investigation to figure out what went wrong.
