DVG: protect your pet during and after a hurricane

Everyone wants to keep their homes and families safe during the hurricane season, so as many are deep in preparation, it is important to remember your pets as well. They are, after all, loyal and valued members of the family that fill our lives with joy.

Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, horse, or any other animal that lives outside the house, it is important to be prepared for the increased amount of water and wind we are likely to see during the coming period. If you do not prepare their enclosures properly, there is a high chance that they will not survive a hurricane.

Here are some tips:

1. Prepare a comfortable space for your pet that will keep it protected from the heavy rain and strong winds. If you are able to take the pet inside of the home with you, this would be best, as it will help keep the animal calm as well.

2. Make sure your pet has enough food and clean drinking water for at least 7 days.

3. Make sure to have some form of entertainment for them as well, such as your pet’s favorite toys.

4. Stock up on supplies to keep their area hygienic, especially if they are coming inside the house with you. These are items such as old newspapers, garbage bags, puppy pads, etc.

5. If you have to evacuate during the hurricane, make sure to bring your pet as well. Do not leave them behind.

Our pets and animals in general need our protection.
