Flooding and weather alerts in Curaçao

The Meteorological Service has announced that we can potentially expect very cloudy weather, intense rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning over the ABC islands over the next few days. For Curacao, this forecast indicates the possibility of more rain, thunder, and lightning, especially in areas prone to flooding.

From the early morning hours, intense rainfall began to fall on the western part of Curaçao, especially in the Bandabou area. The rainfall was so intense that it accumulated more than 50 mm of water in some areas, causing flooding in places like Sta. Cruz, Lagun, Tera Kòrá, Barber, and Pannekoek. Because of this, a Weather Alert has been issued for this area, indicating the possibility of more heavy rain and possible flooding.

Police and emergency teams are on alert and have already had to assist a family in Hòfi Mango. They are also monitoring the conditions of the dams in the area to ensure the safety of the residents. Although the Meteorological Service has forecasted a high level of rainfall, the degree of accumulation and its duration are causing serious problems in Bandabou and other areas of Curaçao. A video on YouTube shows the severity of the situation, where the intensity of the weather and its effects can be seen.

The Meteorological Service has warned that rainfall will continue and may intensify over the next few days. The Weather Alert will now extend to the entire island of Curaçao, and the population is asked to take additional precautions. It is recommended to avoid low-lying areas and areas already known for flooding, as well as to limit movement on roads and streets affected by water. Beaches on the western part of Curaçao should also be avoided due to strong currents and possible land movement.

The Crisis Team has convened at Forti to monitor the situation and take additional measures as necessary. Everyone is asked to follow the updates from the Meteorological Service to be informed about the areas most prone to heavier rain and flooding. Given this scenario, it is crucial for residents and visitors to take measures to protect themselves, their homes, neighborhoods, families, and pets.
