If all goes well: same-sex couples can marry in Aruba by the end of the month!

Since in Aruba, our own government and parliamentarians don’t have the courage to address the topic of same-sex marriage, by the end of the month, the case will be heard in the court of cassation in the Netherlands. There will be a final outcome and if all goes well, it means that gay couples will be able to marry in Aruba as well.

Lawyer David Wever from the “Fundacion Orguyo” or Pride Foundation will also be present in the Supreme Court.

There are a few possible scenarios to consider: first, judges could dismiss the discrimination, but it’s a fact that there is discrimination and it needs to be addressed immediately. The Supreme Court could also say there is discrimination but that there is nothing they can do to eliminate it. It’s more likely, however, that the verdict will be a positive one for the gay community and then the law, that is, the parliament, will have to apply it.

It’s a final ruling, so it will give its opinion on whether the court has done its job properly or not. Of course, there’s a possibility that they can send the case back to the court with some recommendations for changes. But everything indicates that the verdict will be as Wever sees it.
