The Coast Guard intercepted a boat carrying 24 people who were attempting to enter Aruba illegally after detecting the vessel on its radar system as it approached the island from Venezuela.
The boat appeared on the Coast Guard’s radar screens as soon as it departed and began heading toward Aruba. After monitoring its movements, the Coast Guard deployed a smaller boat from its patrol vessel to intercept the vessel carrying 24 people.
Many of the people on board had previously been in Aruba. Some had been living on the island and were attempting to return by boat.
Following the interception, the authorities responsible for combating human trafficking and ‘Guarda Nos Costa’ were notified. Arrangements are pending to determine how the individuals will be returned.
The operation highlights the role of radar systems in detecting and monitoring vessels approaching Aruba. It also demonstrates the cooperation between the Coast Guard and police in protecting the island’s borders and maintaining security.
