Matchis urges more Caribbean donors to join global stem cell registry

by Nicole

On Tuesday afternoon, an awareness campaign on stem cell donation officially launched in Aruba. Sonja Kersten, a representative of the Matchis organization, explained why stem cell donation plays a crucial role in modern medicine and how it helps save lives. The main goal of the campaign is to diversify the global donor registry and encourage more people from Aruba and the wider Caribbean region to register. The campaign will run until Saturday.

In modern medicine, stem cell transplantation is an essential treatment for patients with leukemia, blood cancers, and sickle cell disease. The procedure involves destroying the affected immune system and replacing it with healthy stem cells from a donor. For the treatment to succeed, a perfect match between donor and patient is required, otherwise the body may reject the transplanted cells.

One of the most common misconceptions is that stem cell donation is painful. Kersten clarified that the initial registration process is very simple and only requires three cheek swabs to collect a sample. If a match is identified at a later stage, the donor travels to the Netherlands for the procedure. Donation can be done through blood collection after receiving medication that stimulates stem cell production, or through bone marrow donation. The latter is performed under general anesthesia, meaning the donor feels no pain. She also emphasized that it has nothing to do with the spine, as is often mistakenly believed.

Currently, the global donor database includes around 44 million registered donors, but the vast majority are from Western Europe. For this reason, increasing representation from Caribbean communities is considered essential. A more diverse donor pool improves the chances that patients, including those in the region, can find a compatible match and receive life-saving treatment.

As part of its official launch, Matchis Caribbean will hold its first stem cell donor drive at the University of Aruba on the following dates:

Thursday, June 18: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Friday, June 19: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Saturday, June 20: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Sunday, June 21: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Community members are invited to attend, learn more, and register as stem cell donors. Registration takes only five minutes and includes a short online form and a simple mouth swab. The process is quick and can give a patient in the region, or anywhere in the world, a second chance at life.
