Minister Croes and Radboud University discuss cooperation in education

Strengthening education in Aruba, supporting the academic success of Aruban students in the Netherlands, and exploring new opportunities for international cooperation were among the main topics discussed during a meeting between Minister of Education Gerlien Croes and Alexandra van Huffelen, chair of the Executive Board of Radboud University in the Netherlands.

The meeting, held last Friday, provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on the challenges and opportunities facing education in Aruba and internationally. Particular attention was given to strengthening ties with higher education institutions in the Netherlands to support the academic and professional development of young Arubans.

One of the main topics was the academic success of Aruban students pursuing higher education in the Netherlands. Minister Croes stressed the importance of exploring strategies to help students succeed in their studies while taking into account the academic, social, and personal challenges they may face when studying abroad.

The meeting also addressed the concept of “brain gain,” which focuses on how Aruba can benefit from the knowledge, experience, and skills that students and professionals acquire abroad.

“Every young Aruban who pursues an education abroad represents an investment in our country’s future. Our responsibility is to continue building connections that support their academic success while exploring how the knowledge and experience they gain can contribute to Aruba’s development. Brain gain is not only about returning to Aruba, but also about maintaining connections with our talent, wherever they are in the world,” the minister said.

According to Croes, cooperation with universities such as Radboud University could create opportunities to exchange experiences and explore ways to improve the support and preparation available to Aruban students.

The meeting also addressed the transformation of education in the digital age, particularly the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning, research, and the future labor market.

Technological advances are changing how knowledge is shared, the skills future professionals need, and how educational institutions prepare students for the workforce.

Croes emphasized that Aruba must remain actively involved in international discussions on these developments to identify opportunities to modernize education and prepare young people for a world increasingly shaped by technology and innovation.

“Artificial intelligence and digitalization are transforming the world around us. The question is not only how we incorporate technology into education, but also how we prepare our students and educators to use these tools responsibly, critically, and creatively. We want an education system that prepares our young people not only for today’s jobs, but also for tomorrow’s opportunities,” Croes said.

The discussion also ties in with the vision of Learning Cities Aruba, which promotes lifelong learning, knowledge exchange, and preparation for the social, technological, and economic changes affecting the community.

International cooperation to strengthen education in Aruba

Croes and van Huffelen also discussed potential areas of cooperation between Aruba and Radboud University, including opportunities to strengthen education, develop talent, and facilitate knowledge exchange.

For the Ministry of Education, partnerships with international academic institutions offer a way to connect Aruba with specialized knowledge and experience while exploring approaches that could benefit students and the education system as a whole.

The meeting established a basis for further discussions and the evaluation of possible areas of cooperation in the coming period. Croes described the exchange as an important first step toward turning the ideas discussed into concrete initiatives.

“We believe in the power of cooperation and knowledge exchange. Aruba has great potential, and by building strong relationships with international academic institutions, we can continue to expand opportunities for our students, educators, and country. This meeting offered different perspectives and possibilities that we will continue to explore in the coming period, with the goal of strengthening education and creating more opportunities for Aruban talent,” the minister said.

A shared vision for the future of young Arubans

Croes concluded by emphasizing that investing in education involves more than infrastructure and educational programs. It also requires building strategic partnerships, encouraging innovation, and creating opportunities that connect young Arubans with the wider world.

“Aruba’s future depends on the preparation we provide for our young people today. By continuing to invest in knowledge, innovation, and international cooperation, we are building a stronger education system and a country better prepared for future challenges,” Croes concluded.
