Preventing child abuse

One of the best ways to prepare your children against the dangers of child abuse is by talking to them and making them aware to recognize certain signs that could help prevent abuse in the future.

A few tips:

  • Talk to your children about appropriate and inappropriate behavior
  • Talk to your children about how to recognize a safe and unsafe situation
  • Teach them what to do if a person acts inappropriate to them and how to search for help
  • Maintain open communication with your children, so as an adult, you could identify things out of the norm in their behavior
  • Make sure that your home is a safe place for your children
  • Don’t leave your children alone or with someone, you don’t know well
  • Always know where your kids are when they go out
  • Teach them about sexuality appropriate to their age; this must begin at a young age where they are aware that they are different from grown-ups
  • Call private parts by their name and don’t give it a name like ‘cookie’
  • Teach your children that no one is allowed to touch their private parts without their permission. This counts even for parents

All of this could prevent possible child abuse by giving the children tools to recognize the danger if you, as a parent, aren’t there. It is good to create a strong network in the children’s lives that is important to support and watch if they find themselves in a delicate situation.
