Surinamese community celebrates 47 years of independence

The Surinamese community on the island is in full celebration mode. On Saturday, the community celebrated its 47 years of independence at the Playa Pabou CommunityCenter. Carla Martinus is the secretary of the organisation AruSur and explained that they had a full day of food sale, dance, shows and more importantly, the sense of community. They are known to be united and even host a football match every Saturday at the Santa Fe field.

According to Martinuns, it is important to organize such events. Regardless of the fact that you are no longer in Surinam, it is important to recognize the significance of the 25th of November for each Surinamese person. The relations between Surinam and Aruba is one that stretches across decades and before 1975, Surinam was even part of the Dutch Antilles. AruSur will continue organizing more events to bring the community together. One can expect different activities organized on Labor Day and other special days throughout the year.
