Minister Geoffrey Wever announces price increase for local eggs

Local eggs are the only product on Aruba that are still protected by the market. This means that the government supports and stimulates the production of local eggs in order to protect our local products and limits the number of eggs that are imported. They also have a specified price appointed to them, to prevent over-consumption.

However, the increase in price of chicks and chicken feed have led to local eggs needing an adaptation in their prices. This way, we can guarantee that the businesses can continue to produce them, because if there is no adjustment, this local product becomes in danger of extinction.

The Department of Economic Affairs, Commerce, and Industry has, based on information received concerning inportatons and costs related to production of the local eggs, analyzed and calculated the new price for local eggs. The new price will be Afl. 6,65 for a dozen, which is a 1,02 florin increase per dozen. This new price went in on the 5th of December 2022.

In order to prevent any losses, there will be inspections held at the supermarkets by the Department of Economic Affairs to determine if they are complying with the new prices.

“Local production is limited and remains a challenge. It is therefore important to continue stimulating and helping to buy locally whenever possible. The government’s vision is to have more local production, and therefore making Aruba less dependent on importation of products. The Pandemic taught us a valuable lesson and showed us that Aruba is vulnerable. We must therefore do our best to become less dependent on international facotrs”, according to Minister Geoffrey Wever.
